  • Robbie Savage believes Manchester United need three signings to compete
  • Kalidou Koulibaly, Jack Grealish and Jadon Sancho are Savage’s priorities
  • He says these signings will see United challenge Liverpool and Manchester City

Robbie Savage says Manchester United are only three signings away from being able to compete with Liverpool and Manchester City at the top of the Premier League again.

United have fallen well short of their rivals in recent times as they find themselves 38 points adrift of the the Merseyside club at the top of the league, and also look unable to catch their Manchester rivals despite City themselves having a patchy season.

Despite this, United academy product Savage believes if the club were able to complete the signings of Kalidou Koulibaly, Jack Grealish and Jadon Sancho, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer would have a team capable to competing with top teams once again.

‘Green shoots of recovery have often been hard to find in Manchester United’s patchy season – but they are only three signings away from challenging Liverpool and Manchester City,’ Savage said in his column for the Mirror.

‘That may seem a bold statement about a team who have lost against Crystal Palace, Bournemouth, Newcastle, West Ham, Watford and Burnley this season.’

Despite some poor results there have been bright moments for United this season, as they beat City and remain the only team to take a point off Liverpool.

Solskjaer was also boosted by the marquee signing of Bruno Fernandes and short-term deal for Odion Ighalo in January, and Savage thinks a summer window of achieving their top transfer targets could see them return as a force in the Premier League.

‘If Solskjaer was handed £250 million to go out and sign central defender Kalidou Koulibaly, playmaker Jack Grealish and Jadon Sancho up front, Solskjaer’s best team would be capable of giving Liverpool and Manchester City a run for their money next season.

Napoli’s Koulibaly, Aston Villa’s Jack Grealish and Borussia Dortmund’s Jadon Sancho are all having exceptional seasons for their respective clubs and have been linked with moves to Old Trafford in the summer.

The Red Devils are just three points off fourth spot as they are set to battle it out with Tottenham, Chelsea and Sheffield United for for Champions League qualification for next season.
