In a statement, Adidas said: ‘To create it, the adidas design team studied the jersey worn during its first ever German Championship winning season in 1932, identifying what made it so iconic, and what could be adapted for the 2020 release.

‘Combining design principles and motifs from the two different eras, the 2020 edition represents the history and future of one of the most iconic clubs in the world.’

The design also features a subtle ‘120 jahre’, which translates to 120 years, on the inside collar.

The shirt will be worn just once by the players, during the club’s home fixture with Augsburg on March 8.

In 1932, Bayern worn their first national title in what was the 25th edition of the competition.

Back then, teams had to qualify in regional championships before playing in a knockout tournament.

Bayern’s first triumph saw them beat Eintracht Frankfurt 2–0 in the final, but their progress in the following years was halted by the advent of Nazism.

The 1933 season was the last of its kind before it was replaced by the Nazi-installed Gauligas, 16 regional divisions.

Bayern’s Jewish club president and coach both left the club and many others associated were also purged, and it was branded a ‘Jew’s club’.

The German side did not go on to win another league title until the rebranded Bundesliga in 1969, and they have since gone on to win 27 more.

Fans on social media have on the whole reacted positively to the design and its nods to the club’s roots.

The announcement comes the morning after Bayern produced a stunning performance at Stamford Bridge to see off Chelsea 3-0 in the first leg of their Champions League tie.
