Inter Milan ‘could make a move’ for Tottenham defender Jan Vertonghen

Inter Milan ‘could make a move’ for Jan Vertonghen if the Belgian defender fails to agree a new deal with Spurs as Antonio Conte targets another recruit from the Premier League

  • Inter Milan have ‘already made contact’ with Jan Vertonghen’s camp over move
  • Belgium international’s contract at Tottenham expires in the summer
  • That means he would be available to Inter or anyone else on a free transfer
  • Spurs boss Jose Mourinho is still hopeful Vertonghen will sign a new contract

Inter Milan ‘could make a move’ for Jan Vertonghen if the defender fails to agree a new contract at Tottenham this summer.

The 32-year-old centre-back would be available on a free transfer as his contract expires at the end of the season.

According to the Evening Standard, Serie A title chasers Inter wish to strengthen their defence and could move for the Belgium international.

It is believed Inter have already made contract with Vertonghen’s camp as he has been free to speak to overseas clubs since last month.

Inter manager Antonio Conte, the former Chelsea boss, has already signed Christian Eriksen from Spurs for £17million this season.

His recruitment of Premier League players has also seen Manchester United trio Romelu Lukaku, Ashley Young and Alexis Sanchez come to the San Siro as well as Chelsea’s Victor Moses.

Vertonghen could replace Milan Skriniar at the heart of Inter’s defence after he attracted interest from Manchester City.

Tottenham manager Jose Mourinho would ideally like Vertonghen to follow the example of fellow defender Toby Alderweireld and sign a contract extension but talks have stalled.

Of late, Mourinho has favoured a partnership of Alderweireld and Davinson Sanchez, while 20-year-old Japhet Tanganga has also impressed.

Vertonghen’s agent Tom De Mul spoke about his situation last month.

He told Belgian newspaper HLN: ‘Jan is still super happy at Spurs and loves London. He is still very committed.

‘There’s a lot of respect for Tottenham, just like there is a lot of respect from the club towards us. That’s logical after eight seasons, there is a connection.

‘We haven’t reached an agreement as yet, but we don’t rule out anything. There’s interest in him as a free agent, but Spurs is a very interesting option for us. The door’s still open.’
