The England captain’s 108 off 69 balls propelled her side to 176 for two in their second group game in Canberra despite the loss of openers Amy Jones and Danni Wyatt for ducks. The 169 Knight put on with Nat Sciver was the highest partnership in women’s Twenty20 cricket for England.

Pakistan then upset West Indies on Wednesday, throwing Group B wide open and leaving England needing to beat both sides in their remaining matches to be sure of reaching the semi-finals.

Meanwhile, England paceman Stuart Broad has signed a new two-year contract at Nottinghamshire.

Nottingham-born Broad, 33, England’s second highest Test wicket-taker with 485, has spent 12 seasons at Trent Bridge.

He said: ‘I certainly can’t envisage playing for any other county.’
