‘For me it was bad news’: Toby Alderweireld reflects on ‘strange’ sacking of Mauricio Pochettino that paved the way for Jose Mourinho to take over as Tottenham manager

Toby Alderweireld has described the ‘strange’ time around the sacking of Mauricio Pochettino at Tottenham and Jose Mourinho‘s ensuing arrival as manager.

Speaking to Het Nieuwsblad, Alderweireld said: ‘For me it was bad news because you are always loyal to your trainer.

‘The next day another trainer suddenly comes to you. That was very strange, but that is also part of football. Then you try to make the best of it.

Toby Alderweireld has spoken on Mauricio Pochettino’s sacking and Jose Mourinho’s arrival

‘Pochettino was fired when I was playing a match with Belgium. I got the news when I got into the dressing room.

‘Immediately afterwards I got questions about it from Belgian journalists. It all went so fast that I didn’t have time to think about it.’

Pcohettino led Tottenham to the Champions league final last season but their form wilted at the start of 2019-20.

Spurs are currently seventh in the Premier League, five points off of the top four.
