Conor McGregor’s coach John Kavanagh tips ‘Notorious’ to return to boxing for ‘something big’

‘I’d honestly be surprised if it doesn’t happen in the next 12-18 months’: Conor McGregor’s coach John Kavanagh tips ‘Notorious’ to return to boxing for ‘something big’

  • John Kavanagh believes Conor McGregor will have second boxing match soon
  • ‘Notorious’ famously fought Floyd Mayweather in most lucrative bout ever
  • Kavanagh thinks his man will step in the ring within the next 12-18 months
  • He also thinks Justin Gaethje would be perfect next opponent in the UFC

Conor McGregor‘s coach believes he will return to the world of boxing in the next 12-18 months.

John Kavanagh thinks the ‘Notorious’ will have ‘something big’ planned in the ring again following on from his foray into the sport in the lucrative defeat by Floyd Mayweather back in 2017.

He told Gareth A Davies: ‘I’d honestly be surprised if Conor doesn’t have a boxing match in the next 12-18 months.

Conor McGregor is likely to return to boxing in the next 12-18 months, says John Kavanagh

‘He loves boxing. He loved the training for the Mayweather fight. It has to be something big, whatever he does seems to always get bigger. He’s always looking for that next step up.’

McGregor’s formative years were spent in the Crumlin Boxing Gym before he switched to MMA and became the sport’s most famous fighter.

He returned to the cage in January, delivering a picture perfect KO of Donald Cerrone in Las Vegas.

Speculation abounds over McGregor’s next opponent and Kavanagh thinks Justin Gaethje would be a good fit.

‘At the moment, definitely top of the list for me would be Justin Gaethje. I think it is a very interesting, stylistic match-up.

‘Justin really believes in his striking ability, really believes in his power. He also has a quick-ish stop of Cerrone.

‘I think there would be some great exchanges, a lot of forward pressure from Gaethje and Conor thrives under that so in the summer or something like that, that’s what I’d love to see. We know Gaethje won’t take a back step and Conor will meet him in the middle, it would be fireworks.’

McGregor still holds the ambition to win back his lightweight title from Khabib Nurmagomedov, who faces Tony Ferguson in April.

But the Russian has no interest in facing McGregor again unless the Irishman earns his shot, which a victory over Gaethje could well provide.
