Roma are reportedly ready to strike a deal with Manchester United for defender Chris Smalling on a permanent deal. 

The English centre-back has been a huge success during his loan period in the Italian capital and the Serie A side should be able to sign him for around £25million. 

Smalling’s current deal with the Red Devils runs out in 2022 and United are not willing to let the defender leave for a small fee.

Corriere della Sera reported that Roma are not willing to pay the full asking price and hope a deal can be struck between the two clubs. 

Smalling has been vocal in the fact he has enjoyed life in Italy and has settled well in Serie A. He has even revealed that he would be willing to take a pay cut to stay in Rome.

Roma may face some competition for the Englishman, however, with Arsenal interested and willing to meet the £25million valuation. 

It is believed that United will allow Smalling to leave once they have sorted a replacement, with Napoli’s Kalidou Koulibaly the favoured option.
