Alexander Nubel can learn under Manuel Neuer at Bayern Munich, insists club legend Oliver Kahn

‘He has the chance to develop and learn’: Bayern Munich legend Oliver Kahn convinced summer signing Alexander Nubel will arrive as back-up, rather than as a replacement, for veteran goalkeeper Manuel Neuer

Oliver Kahn has suggested that Manuel Neuer will remain No 1 at Bayern Munich despite the arrival of Alexander Nubel from Schalke this summer.

Neuer’s long-term future at the Allianz Arena has been thrown into doubt with rising star Nubel having already agreed a deal to join the club on a five-year deal.

But Kahn, now on the Bayern board, believes Neuer will still get the nod, allowing Nubel to develop under him in his first season at the club.

Kahn was 38 when he hung up the gloves for Bayern and so with Neuer currently 34, the club legend is convinced he will remain as the primary option.

‘In general, as I have shown myself, goalkeepers can of course play into old age, but maintaining a high level is a great challenge,’ Kahn told Sport Bild.

‘In Alexander Nubel, we get a highly talented goalkeeper, who has the chance to develop and learn behind Manuel Neuer.

‘Not many have the opportunity to work with the best goalkeeper in the world every day.’
