Mario Gotze ‘expected to leave Borussia Dortmund’ in search of a new challenge with Everton and West Ham seen as possible destinations

  • Mario Gotze is expected to leave Borussia Dortmund at the end of his contract
  • Both Everton and West Ham are seen as possible destinations for the 27-year-old
  • The midfielder has spent his entire career in Germany but is expected to leave
  • An extension to his Dortmund contract is ‘impossible’ after two spells at the club

Mario Gotze is expected to leave Borussia Dortmund in the summer with the German wanting to take on a new challenge.

The 27-year-old’s contract is set to expire on June 30 and, according to Sport Bild, an extension is ‘impossible’.

This means the midfielder will be looking for a new club and there could be several suitors across the European leagues.

Gotze has endured a frustrating season at Dortmund with just six starts in all competitions.

Everton and West Ham have been mentioned as possible destinations according to the report but the World Cup winner is currently earning around £9million a year at Dortmund.

Neither English club could afford those wages meaning Gotze would have to be prepared to take a significant cut to play in the Premier League.

AC Milan are also thought to be interested in taking him on a free transfer at the end of his contract.

The midfielder has spent his entire career in Germany, joining Dortmund at the age of nine and progressing through the ranks.

He famously agreed to join Bayern Munich in April 2013 for a fee of £33million, making him the most expensive German of all time before Mesut Ozil broke the record again later that year.

Dortmund and Munich ended up facing each other in the final of the Champions League before Gotze made the switch across Germany but the midfielder was ruled out of the game through injury.

He returned to Dortmund in 2016 admitting his regret at leaving three years earlier.
