Brentford admit club can no longer ‘reliably forecast’ when new stadium will open amid coronavirus pandemic

Brentford say they can no longer ‘reliably forecast’ when their new stadium will be completed having been forced to scale back work on the project due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The Championship promotion-chasers had hoped to finish work on their new 18,500 capacity Brentford Community Stadium this month in order to move in in July.

The stadium developers have had to significantly reduce the number of workers they had on-site, which recently has been as many as 400, and, as a result, scale back the work being undertaken on the stadium.

For the next two weeks work will focus on the electrical and security areas with the situation reviewed in a fortnight.

Brentford’s players have also agreed to wage deferral ‘until football is back and games are being played without restrictions.’

For the foreseeable future, Brentford’s wages will be capped at £5,000 per week while some non-football staff have also been furloughed.

But the gesture by Thomas Frank’s players means those staff affected will be able to have their salaries topped up to 100 per cent.

Frank, his coaching staff and members of the club’s hierarchy are also expected to defer their wages.
