Sheffield United furlough their staff, becoming the fifth Premier League side after Spurs and Newcastle

  • The latest Premier League side to furlough their staff is Sheffield United
  • The season’s overachievers join Spurs, Newcastle, Norwich and Bournemouth
  • However, the Blades insist they will continue to pay their staff in full

Sheffield United have become the fifth Premier League club to furlough staff — but insist they will continue to pay them in full.

The majority of those affected are casual staff, although a small number of full-time workers — believed to be less than 50 — are also impacted.

United say they are not currently using the Government’s job retention scheme but have not ruled out doing so in the future.

A club statement said: ‘Permanent and casual staff will continue to be paid in full, despite the challenges of dealing with the impact of Covid-19.’

Tottenham, Newcastle, Bournemouth, and Norwich have all been criticised for furloughing non-playing staff, meaning the Government will cover 80 per cent of wages up to £2,500 per month.

Bespoke deals between clubs are now coming together with West Ham and Southampton having already agreed pay deferrals.

Chelsea are understood to be holding amicable talks between managing director Marina Granovskaia and captain Cesar Azpilicueta which are expected to reach a conclusion soon.
