‘He is a clever lad, he is not someone who would get caught out’: Gary Neville claims frustrated Harry Kane DELIBERATELY ‘opened the door’ to big money move away from Tottenham

  • Gary Neville believes Harry Kane knew what he was doing hinting at a move
  • Kane has been linked with a transfer to Man United for a £200m record fee
  • Spurs chairman Daniel Levy said he would sanction the transfer this summer
  • Tottenham recently announced they were placing some staff on furlough
  • Neville said he thinks the decision would not have impressed their star striker

Gary Neville has said that Tottenham striker Harry Kane deliberately ‘opened the door’ for a big summer move after he revealed he would consider leaving the club.

Sportsmail revealed that Kane would be open to a move to Old Trafford in a transfer that could cost United around £200million. Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy made it clear that he would sanction the deal and allow Kane to leave in the summer, in order to help the club cover the cost of their £1billion stadium.

The Spurs talisman has been privately considering his future and former United defender Gary Neville believes a transfer to the club could happen due to their ‘history’.

‘Maybe, it fits Man United’s historical transfers, trying to sign Shearer, Ferdinand, Rooney – the most famous British players in the Premier League,’ Neville told Sky Sports.

‘So it does fit with that, in terms of Harry Kane – but I did work with him at England and he is a clever lad, he is not someone who would get caught out.’

‘The little opening of the door he left with Jamie (on Instagram Live), was probably something that had something in it,’ he added.

Kane revealed his ambitions to win trophies in an Instagram Live session with Jamie Redknapp last week and alluded to the fact he would leave Spurs if he felt they weren’t progressing.

KANE’S PREMIER LEAGUE RECORD

Appearances: 201

Goals: 136

Assists: 20

Kane said: ‘It’s one of those things, I couldn’t say yes or no. I love Spurs. If I don’t feel we’re progressing as a team or moving in the right direction, I’m not someone who would stay just for the sake of it. I’m an ambitious player.’

The striker has failed to win a single trophy with Tottenham since making his mark on the first team in 2014.

Tottenham recently placed their non-playing staff on furlough as they try to ride out the financial implications of the coronavirus pandemic. However, Neville implied their business-first attitude would have not gone down well with their star striker.

He explained: ‘I don’t think Kane would have been impressed with what they did the other week.’

The 26-year-old has made 201 Premier League appearances and netted 136 goals for Tottenham. Neville added: ‘Any club in the Premier League club would want Kane. There are some signings that are like gold. You just know they’re going to work.

‘Kane is unbreakable in terms of his mentality, he will always score goals, give 100 per cent in training. It would be a perfect signing in terms of what they need.

‘If they can get someone up front like Kane, it would be a fantastic spine. But I think that speculation has come out because of Kane leaving the door ajar with Jamie.’
