Jurgen Klopp has opened up on the moment he heard the shocking news that Liverpool icon Sir Kenny Dalglish was in hospital with coronavirus

Arguably the most important figure in the club’s history, Dalglish went into hospital due to a separate illness, before later discovering he had contracted the virus. 

To the relief of English football, the 69-year-old returned home on Sunday to begin a period of isolation, and is asymptomatic.

Klopp, who under Dalglish’s watchful eye has become another hugely influential figure in the club’s history, recounted how he discovered the news. 

‘It was a real shock three days ago when I heard about it first. The boys were sent a message in our WhatsApp group and everybody was like, “Wow”,’ the German told the club’s official website

‘What you feel in that moment is a massive difference if you know somebody who got the virus, or if you don’t know.

‘In this moment, it was like, “Wow, one of us has it” and it was really crazy. 

‘I had the opportunity to text immediately with one of his daughters and we spoke about it. She was quite, not relaxed, but she was fine and said it looked all well – and two days later we heard he was released from hospital.

‘It’s good news – very good news – and I hope he is doing well still.

‘We all know Kenny and we love him. We just sent him all our thoughts and prayers in that moment, but maybe he didn’t need it, which is even better.’ 

Dalglish made 515 appearances for the Reds between 1977 and 1990 after joining from Celtic, with the later part of his playing career spent as player/manager.    

He returned for a second spell in management from 2011 to 2012, taking charge of the likes of Steven Gerrard, Luis Suarez and a young Jordan Henderson.
