England Women’s captain Steph Houghton has revealed that the entire Lionesses squad have donated to the Premier League‘s #PlayersTogether initiative in a bid to support the NHS amid the coronavirus pandemic.

In a letter posted by various members of Phil Neville’s squad on social media, it was announced that they would contribute some cash to the fund set up by top-flight players last week.

The statement read: ‘After discussions with a number of Premier League players, we are delighted to confirm that the whole of the Lionesses squad will make a collective donation to the #PlayersTogether fund.’

Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson was a driving force in getting the #PlayersTogether movement off the ground and that proved immensely popular with his peers.

The cause, publicly backed by more than 160 players, aims to ‘distribute money to where it is needed most’ in the fight against the global pandemic.

Funds will go to ‘those fighting for us on the NHS frontline as well as other key areas of need’, a statement announced.

‘This is a critical time for our country and for our NHS,’ the statement continued, ‘and we are determined to help in any way that we can.

‘The contributions will help NHSCT quickly grant funds to the front line to support in a number of ways.’

Given a staggering 92 per cent of British people think Premier League players should take a pay cut during the coronavirus crisis, according to a YouGov Sport survey, the new initiative launched last week changes the narrative around greed and generosity of players.

Suddenly, players had gone from vilified and criticised to praised for their smart and generous donation.
