Real Madrid striker Luka Jovic is set to appear before the public prosecutor in his home country of Serbia after flouting self-isolation rules last month.

Serbian outlet Pink said last month that the 22-year-old was reported by Serbian police on March 19 for breaking the 28-day self-isolation period that all Serbians must currently undertake once they have returned from a country that is considered ‘high risk’ with regards to the coronavirus.

Jovic insisted after being reported that he thought he was allowed to leave the house once a day to buy essentials and was only going to a chemist.

He was reported by the police after flying back to his homeland on March 12 despite Madrid telling their players to self isolate in quarantine to avoid contracting coronavirus.

Despite criticism from Jovic’s dad and the Serbian government for breaking club-enforced quarantine to return home, Real Madrid have stood by their player, but he is still set to face action in the country.

The punishment for breaking self-isolation in Serbia varies between a £1,111 (1,275 euros) fine and a three-year prison sentence.

The news comes after fellow Serbia international Aleksandar Prijovic was handed a three-month house arrest sentence for breaking the restrictions to go have drinks with friends.

Madrid officials are also confident that he will fulfil his potential after a poor debut season.

The striker joined Madrid in a £57 million move from Benfica after two prolific seasons on loan at Eintracht Frankfurt but has scored just twice this term.
