Manchester United legend Gary Neville has made a significant donation to Brighouse Town to help the non-league club cope with the financial impact of the coronavirus crisis.

Brighouse, based in West Yorkshire, play in the Northern Premier League Division One North West. They were in eleventh place before this season’s results were expunged.

Neville chose to make the donation as he recalls going with his late father to watch Salford City lose 3-1 to Brighouse, who play at St Giles Road.

Neville told Brighouse’s official website: ‘Brighouse Town holds a special place in my heart even though the result did not go in our favor with Salford City suffering a 3-1 defeat on the day.’

His father, Neville Neville, died in 2015 aged 65.

The club expressed their gratitude towards Neville, with a statement reading: ‘Brighouse Town Football Club are extremely grateful that Gary Neville ex- Manchester United legend and Sky Sports pundit has donated a significant amount towards helping the club in these uncertain times.

‘Gary’s donation will help to go towards the loss of income through the season being ended early by the Bet Victor Northern Premier League back in March.

‘The loss of income through no home games and the Club house being shut has added to the Club’s difficulty in maintaining an income stream which has led to uncertainty within Brighouse Town Football Club.

‘The generous donation and the donations of others including existing sponsors, famous footballers and other local Business owners in the community will help to ensure we can get through this as a Football Club.’

In addition to his media work with Sky Sports, Neville is a co-owner of League Two side Salford City, who are still waiting to see whether they will resume playing this season.
