Barcelona midfielder Ivan Rakitic says his side will have to be awarded the La Liga title if the current season doesn’t resume, as they are currently top of the table.

Quique Setien’s side are currently two points clear of rivals Real Madrid in the table with nine games remaining before the season was suspended due to the coronavirus crisis.

Whilst Rakitic, who has been in and out of the starting XI this season, hopes the season can be concluded, he believes Barca should be awarded the title if play cannot continue this summer, as opposed to the season being declared null and void.

‘We all want to play again and to win the league by playing,’ the Croat told Spanish outlet Movistar+.

‘I also understand that if we can’t go back somehow, the season will have to end. If we are at the top then we will have to be the champions, but deadlines must be exhausted.

‘The ideal scenario would be to finish whenever, but always with a well-made plan, especially considering next season too.’

The former Sevilla midfielder, who has been at the club since 2014 and has won every major honour during his time at the Camp Nou, is out-of-contract next summer.

The 32-year-old has been linked with a move away for more game-time and has at times admitted his unhappiness, but insists he is happy at Barcelona.

‘I don’t want to give the feeling of being angry or anything like that. It’s not like that.

‘I’m calm and happy where I am, but of course there are two sides and we want to do things well.’
