Marcus Rashford has admitted that he endured a ‘tough period’ at Manchester United under Jose Mourinho, but says that the Portuguese made him stronger mentally.

Mourinho was in charge of United from the summer of 2016 until December 2018, and won the Europa League and the League Cup in 2017.

During his time at United Mourinho was often criticised for the team’s unexciting style of play, while he had disagreements with key players such as Paul Pogba.

Rashford made 125 appearances under Mourinho, scoring 28 goals and providing 20 assists. 

The 22-year-old reflected on his time under Mourinho and admits he is grateful for the experience that he gained. 

Rashford told the Official Manchester United Podcast: ”It was tough but I think when you look back on it in five or six years they’re the moments that give you that mental toughness.  

‘As an all-round player I’ve improved a lot and a lot of it is down to those two years under Jose. We had ups and downs – when I look back at it, it was a tough period but definitely a period that made a better player.’

Mourinho often elected to deploy Rashford out wide, with the England international learning to become more diligent defensively.

Under Mourinho Rashford also committed more fouls than usual and received 13 yellow cards as well as a red card.

Since Mourinho’s departure Rashford has proceeded to push on under the guidance of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer – he has scored 19 goals in 31 appearances for United this season.
