He’s the reigning Best Actor Oscar winner, for a role that’s struck Academy gold before.

Joaquin Phoenix was spotted Wednesday in the Laurel Canyon area of Los Angeles, California, rocking a black hoodie which said ‘Animal Equality’.

In the rare sighting, Phoenix, 45, wore black jeans and matching Converse sneakers as he made his way into a store.

The Joker actor covered up in a protective black face mask, as well as a pair of tortoiseshell wayfarer sunglasses.

Joaquin shoved his hands in his pockets as he walked along, his greying hair hanging long around his temples.

The Walk The Line star had another pair of reading glasses hung on the collar of his t-shirt, which looked to be blue and striped.

In February, Phoenix won the Best Lead Actor Oscar for his role in last year’s Joker, which was a searing departure from the average comic book movie –– Todd Phillips’ 2019 crime noir and origin story for the iconic villain resembled Martin Scorsese’s Taxi Driver a lot more than it did any of the Marvel movies.

Joker grossed a billion dollars, and Joaquin swept awards season winning the Academy Award, Golden Globe, BAFTA, SAG, and Critics Choice Award for the role.

A sequel to Joker is currently in the works by Todd Philips, but in very early stages.

Another dark and gritty portrayal of the Joker, back in 2008, was also awarded an Oscar – namely Heath Ledger’s in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight.

And while Ledger won the Best Supporting Actor Oscar for the role, he would not live to experience the victory, as he passed away in January of 2008 soon after production on The Dark Knight wrapped.

Joaquin, meanwhile, won his Academy Award after three previous nominations, for Gladiator, Walk The Line, and his brilliant performance in Paul Thomas Anderson’s 2012 film The Master.

But in spite of being one of the most celebrated actors in Hollywood, Phoenix recently admitted, in a GQ cover story for the May issue, that he still gets ‘crippling anxiety’ whenever he starts a new film role.

He went on to say that he even gets physically ill from nerves, and that many ‘think it’s an act.’
