Claire Danes says Homeland helped her grow as an artist as CIA thriller wraps up after eight seasons on Showtime: ‘It’s been great for me as an actress’

Claire Danes says her Homeland character Carrie Mathison helped take her career into new places.

‘It’s been great for me as an actress, ’cause so often – especially coming out of my twenties – you know, I was playing ingénues or characters who were completely defined by their romantic experience, or the guy!’ said Danes, 41.

The actress, who broke out opposite Jared Leto on the 90s MTV series My So-Called Life and later starred opposite Leonardo DiCaprio in the 1996 motion picture Romeo + Juliet, chat Sunday with CBS about wrapping up in her role as the CIA on the series Homeland after eight seasons on Showtime, as its last episode airs Sunday.

Danes has played Carrie Mathison on the hit Showtime series since 2011, garnering a pair of Emmys and another pair of Golden Globes for her efforts on the thriller, as her character balances her high-stress career with bipolar disorder.

Homeland director Lesli Linka Glatter said of the role: ‘I think it was a brave choice, but it’s also an exciting choice.’

She continued: ‘How many characters are as rich as this for women that are on TV or films? I think it’s a role that doesn’t come around that often, and she sure jumped into it.’

The New York City native in the interview told CBS that she had no regrets about passing on her part in another role opposite DiCaprio, in the 1997 blockbuster Titanic.

‘No, no, no, not at all,’ she said when asked about regrets. ‘It wasn’t my destiny!

‘Titanic, specifically, I had just finished filming Romeo + Juliet,’ said Danes, who’s mother to two children with husband Hugh Dancy, 44: Cyrus, seven, and Rowan, one.

The film ‘was another romantic epic,’ Danes said, and ‘just so identical to this last thing that I had just done, and yeah, it just wasn’t right for me in that moment.’

Homeland’s series finale, co-starring Mandy Patinkin, Costa Ronin and Linus Roache, airs Sunday on Showtime.
