Hayden Quinn has laughed off claims he wore an earpiece on MasterChef Australia.

The 34-year-old chef set the record straight after being regularly seen with a small piece of black plastic poking out of his trademark baseball cap.

During Sunday’s episode, which saw him eliminated from the competition, he revealed that the item behind his ear was simply a pen.

‘Pen pen pen pen! So many people confused by this,’ Hayden tweeted on Sunday, after many fans questioned if he was wearing a secret earpiece.

Before he offered his clarification, one viewer had speculated on Twitter: ‘On Hayden’s ear, is it a speaker with someone telling him cooking instructions?’  

Another eagle-eyed fan wrote: ‘Is Hayden wearing a Bluetooth headset? What is that hanging near his ear?’

Hayden was eliminated at the end of Sunday’s episode of MasterChef. 

The fan favourite from Manly was undone when he failed to make horseradish and beetroot the starring ingredients in his final dish.

He wrote on Instagram afterwards: ‘What a night! What an opportunity! Thank you, thank you, thank you to all of you for watching, for sending lovely comments, for the support and the love – I really appreciate it and it means so much.’

After his departure, the Family Food Fight star and cookbook author said he’d found being on MasterChef again ‘addictive’.  

He told 10 Daily: ‘MasterChef is such an amazing opportunity. It’s a little bit addictive, the adrenaline rush, all that is suddenly very hard to say no to.’ 

Hayden, who is filming the second season of his outdoorsy series Taste of Australia, added: ‘I think my time in the kitchen is very much over, I’ll stick to cooking food in a goat paddock.’
