Kyle Sandilands reveals why his face was ‘beetroot red’ on 60 Minutes – and admits he ‘looked like he’d been in a nuclear reactor for a month’

Kyle Sandilands has explained why he looked so red in the face on Sunday night’s episode of 60 Minutes.

Discussing the interview on his KIIS FM breakfast show on Monday, the 48-year-old radio host blamed his ‘beetroot’ appearance on the oppressive heat in the studio.

He also appeared flushed and sweaty on camera because he had ignored host Karl Stefanovic‘s advice to wear makeup.

‘It was so hot when I was filming that thing and I thought, “Look how red I am. Am I that red in real life?”‘ Kyle told his co-host Jackie ‘O’ Henderson.

‘Even my arms were glowing red. I looked like I’d been in a nuclear reactor for a month. And then I said, “I got a big fat red beetroot head.”‘

Jackie responded: ‘The interview hadn’t started yet, you came in late and I was there doing hair and makeup and you were like, “Oh I didn’t think we were dressing up for this.” And you came in in your baseball cap and no makeup.’

Jackie continued: ‘And then Karl said, “Mate, take off your hat and put makeup on. Trust me, you’ll regret it if you don’t”. And you told him to eff off.’

Kyle chuckled and said he ‘went to town’ on Karl because he’d chosen to wear makeup.

‘He had a little Mac compact, and I went to town on him about it because it was his and he was carrying it around like a lady,’ he said.

‘He wanted [my] hat off and I said, “This is how I am. Start filming now – you’ve got half an hour.”‘

Kyle and 60 Minutes faced a backlash after his interview aired on Sunday night.

Promos had aired all week on Channel Nine hinting that the shock jock was going to disclose a secret health condition – but in the full segment he revealed he was only joking.

A tearful Kyle responded to the backlash on air on Monday morning, saying the joke was his way of addressing his profound loneliness and depression.

‘I don’t have anything [physically] that I know of… but there is something wrong, but it’s not a medical thing,’ he said.

‘The honest truth as to why I was so able to cry, like all that breakdown stuff so easy, was because inside I’m very sad.’
