Coronation Street icon Bill Roache, best known for playing soap star Ken Barlow was pictured outside his Cheshire home on Tuesday.

The 88-year-old looked incredibly youthful wearing a pair of light blue shorts which sat above the knee with a crisp white shirt and brown leather deck shoes.

Despite hair salons being closed, his mop of blond hair was expertly coiffed as she emerged with a bag of shopping in hand.

While Bill was not in work himself, some of his Corrie castmates have returned back to the cobbles for the first time since the coronavirus hit and halted filming.

In fact, Andy Whyment, who plays Kirk Sutherland, delightedly shared a picture of the script on Instagram, writing about his excitement over returning to work.

Actors are being given strict safety rules and will be social distancing on set, but older members of the cast are not allowed to return at this time.

Taking care: It has been revealed that the over-70s have been worst hit by the disease and bosses will want to take every precaution so Bill will not return just yet

Bill has played Ken since the show began in December 1960, making him the longest running soap character.

Back in April, he appeared on Good Morning Britain from his home, where he insisted the show would NEVER go off air amid fears it would run out of episodes.

Speaking to Piers Morgan alongside his daughter Verity on Monday, he said: ‘I gather we have quite a while.

‘It was going out six times a week and now rationed to three. I think we had about two months [already filmed]. So I think about four months of new stuff.

‘We’ve got 60 years to draw on so I don’t think we’ll be going of air even when they run out.

How does he do it? Bill looked much younger than his years outside his home in Cheshire

He once said: 'Well, it’s the genes to begin with and then it’s what you do with them, isn’t it? You can dissipate yourself with how you live and what you eat'

‘Plenty they could be showing and doing. I think probably three more months.’

Bill celebrated his 88th birthday in lockdown last month, with his family.

In November last year, he appeared on This Morning, where he explained the secret behind his youthful appearance.

He said: ‘Well, it’s the genes to begin with and then it’s what you do with them, isn’t it? You can dissipate yourself with how you live and what you eat.

‘The main thing is aging is a belief system. If you think as I get older I’m going to get slower, “Oh I’m 50, I can’t do this now” you will slow down.

‘Your cells renew themselves all the time and if you slow down, your cell renewal process will slow down.

‘There are basic things. Are you getting enough sleep? Eight to 10 hours.’
