Palm Springs trailer finds Andy Samberg and Cristin Milioti trapped in a hilarious time loop

Andy Samberg and Cristin Milioti find themselves living the same day over and over and over again in the first trailer for the new comedy Palm Springs.

The film debuted at the Sundance Film Festival in January, where it was acquired by Neon and Hulu for $17.5 million, the most ever paid for a Sundance acquisition.

While the deal was originally said to have broken the previous record by just 69 cents (besting the $17.5 million Fox Searchlight paid for The Birth of a Nation in 2016), but Deadline later reported the deal’s built-in bonus structure was actually worth at least $22 million.

The trailer begins with Sarah (Milioti), the maid of honor at a beautiful wedding about to take place in Palm Springs, waking up with a smile on her face at 9:40 AM.

Outside of her hotel room, by the pool, she hears a man say, ‘It’s gonna be a beautiful wedding as we see the happy couple (Tyler Hoechlin and Camila Mendes) at the reception, listening to a speech from Nyles (Samberg).

‘Here you are, standing on the precipice of something so much bigger than anyone here, but always remember, you are not alone,’ he says, which impresses Sarah.

Sarah introduces herself to Nyles at the reception, and the next thing they know, they’re making out on the beach.

Things go awry, though, when Nyles takes his shirt off… and is struck by an arrow, shot by a man in camouflage who chases after him saying, ‘Run rabbit run.’

While she screams, ‘What the f**k is happening?’ Nyles runs into a cave emanating a glowing red light, and while he begs her, ‘Don’t come in here,’ she does and is enveloped by red light.

She wakes up the next morning in the same bed and hears the same man say, ‘It’s gonna be a beautiful wedding.’

She finds Nyles lounging in a floating chair in the pool, as she screams, ‘You! What is going on?’ and starts throwing beer cans at him.

He adds, ‘Guess you followed me,’ stating, ‘It’s one of those infinite time loop situations that you might have heard about.’

He explains that, ‘the second you fall asleep, it just goes right back to the start,’ which is quite similar to 1993 classic Groundhog Day and, more recently, Tom Cruise’s 2014 sci-fi thriller Edge of Tomorrow.

She explains in a bar that she actually, ‘drove all the way home to Austin, and I still woke up here.’

Nyles adds that, ‘One time I smoked a bunch of crystal and made it all the way to Equatorial Guinea.  That was a huge waste of time.’

Another scene shows them in a car with Sarah driving, as he explains they have ‘no choice but to live’ and Sarah says she’s going to get out of it by driving head first into a truck, as he casually says, ‘See you tomorrow,’ as she wakes up in the same bed.

The film is still at 100% on Rotten Tomatoes after 27 reviews out of Sundance, where it was up for the Grand Jury Prize.

Once Sarah has accepted her fate, Nyles tells her to, ’embrace the fact that nothing matters,’ as she asks if he sleeps with people here.

He says he does, but it’s tricky, as we see him try to cut in during the bride and groom’s first dance, which naturally doesn’t work.

Their shenanigans take them on the road and up in the air, piloting a small plane with beers at the ready.

Another scene shows Nyles chatting with another wedding guest, Roy (J.K. Simmons), who tells him the officiant has ‘sweets’ in his pocket, referring to cocaine.

The trailer winds down with a number of shots of Nyles and Sarah’s mis-adventures, and at one point a desperate Sarah says she ‘can’t keep waking up here.’

Sarah says everything they’re doing is meaningless, as Nyles hopes it’s ‘not all meaningless,’ while Roy tells Nyles at least he and Sarah have each other, indicating he’s in the time loop too, but he’s going through it alone.

The trailer ends with Nyles dramatically interrupting the cake-cutting ceremony stating there is a ‘bomb’ in the cake, digging through it and throwing the bomb in the air before it explodes as the guests start to freak out.
