MasterChef fan favourite Poh Ling Yeow claims there was a method to her madness

MasterChef fan favourite Poh Ling Yeow claims there was a method to her madness in the kitchen and says she’s received an outpouring of love after her shock elimination

She developed a reputation for being a bit of a scatterbrain in the kitchen, but newly eliminated MasterChef star Poh Ling Yeow maintains there was a method to her madness.

In an interview with The Project on Monday, the 47-year-old fan favourite insisted she was completely in control during the show’s high pressure cooking challenges.

‘There is a method to the madness. I know I look completely unhinged a lot of the time,’ she laughed.

‘But, yes. Because I’m always thinking about how I can get a cultural story across. I’m thinking about technique that I can show off. And something that no one else might know because I have some cultural techniques under my belt.’

She added with a laugh: ‘So yeah, there is actually quite a lot of strategy, despite what you see.’

Poh had a tendency to carefully watch the oven during her challenges, but she said she wasn’t just willing her food to cook faster.

‘Again, there is actually a purpose to it, because I’m watching to see if I need to crank it up, and when I see it’s browning too much, I lower the temperature again,’ she explained.

‘So I’m actually watching to see how I can keep adjusting, because of course, the timeframes are always a little bit unrealistic. So I am actually doing it for a reason.’

Following her shock elimination during Sunday’s episode, Poh revealed she had been met with an outpouring of love from fans.

‘It sounds really cliche, but I do feel so humbled and so filled with gratitude for the support that I’ve had,’ she said.

‘And what I’m really moved by is that people really get my wackiness… They do get what I’m trying to do, which is really lovely that that punches across through the chaos. Through my Captain Chaos cape!’

Many celebrity fans paid tribute to Poh on social media after she was booted off the hit cooking show.

‘I am gutted devastated broken-hearted and bawling. I’m so glad we are mates @PohLingyeow so I can see you in real life even if I can’t see you on #MasterChefAU,’ wrote actress Magda Szubanski.

Radio star Em Rusciano was emotional, tweeting: ‘Okay I’m going to watch Babysitter’s Club. I need soothing. So long darling Poh, your time necromancy and self doubt despite your brilliance will not be forgotten.’

Added former MasterChef star Adam Liaw: ‘There should be a #MasterChefAU spinoff series where all the judges have to cook for Poh.’
