The show, set in a suburb of Sydney, stars Downton Abbey‘s Laura Carmichael as Agatha, a struggling supermarket worker whose life becomes entwined with middle-class mummy blogger Meghan (The Crown’s Jessica de Gouw) after they meet in a chance encounter.

The women develop an unexpected bond, with their shared pregnancy experience at the heart of their relationship.

However from the outset it was clear to viewers that there is something chilling and unnerving about Agatha, who appears obsessed with her new friend.

One scene showed Agatha skulking in the bushes outside Meghan’s home at nighttime while another moment hinted that she had spoken to Meghan’s son without her knowledge.

Elsewhere it emerged Meghan’s husband Jack (Michael Dorman) is having money problems and is stressed at work.

The episode ended with a startling revelation: that Agatha is faking her pregnancy.

She started sobbing after her son noticed her menstrual blood had leaked through her clothes.

The sense of foreboding prompted viewers to share their theories on what might happen next, with some claiming the plot was ‘easy’ to guess.

One tweeted: ‘Mmm #TheSecretsSheKeeps has the vibes of the film Single White Female. Think Agatha is going to stalk Meghan.’

‘Wouldn’t be surprised if a pet gets offed as well at some point.’

A third added: ‘Agatha will probably try to take over Meghan’s life #TheSecretsSheKeeps.’
