Bill Nye takes to TikTok to explain the science behind face masks

Everyone’s favorite Science Guy is ready to explain why it’s so important to wear a mask.

Bill Nye took to TikTok toc share two informative videos about the science behind different types of masks – proving some face coverings are far more effective than others.

The 64-year-old TV personality made one thing clear though, telling viewers: ‘This is a matter literally of life and death.’

Science rules! Bill Nye The Science Guy posted an experiment demonstrating the importance of masks via TikTok on Wednesday

‘Why does everybody in the scientific community want you to wear masks?’ he asked.

‘Face masks…prevent particles from my respiratory system from getting into the air and getting into your respiratory system,’ Bill explained.

His experiment was simple, using a candle to show how effective different masks or face coverings are from blocking those particles.

First he tried his experiment with just a knit scarf, which – while stylish – did little to block any particles flying from Mr. Nye’s mouth.

A simple, two-layer cloth face mask, on the other hand, barely moving the candle’s flame.

‘If you’re wearing one of these, you’re protecting yourself and the ones around you,’ Bill went on.

Then he started playing around with the serious stuff, pulling out a medical-grade N-95 mask – which did nothing to sway the flame.

Bill continued by explaining the vital importance of mask wearing, telling viewers: ‘The reason we want you to wear a mask is to protect you, sure.

‘But the main reason we want you to wear a mask is to protect me from you, and the particles from your respiratory system from getting into my respiratory system!’

‘Everybody, this is a matter literally of life and death,’ he stressed. ‘And when I use the word “literally,” I mean “literally.”‘

‘So, when you’re out in public please wear a mask,’ he plead before wrapping the clip.

Nye’s mask message comes on the heels of massive spikes of coronavirus cases in states like Alabama, Arizona, California, Florida, Texas, Nevada, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Oregon and South Carolina.

According to The New York Times, the total number of cases across the US has risen 68% in the last two weeks.

The CDC currently recommends the use of cloth face coverings but there is no national mandate for wearing.
