Zoë loves the freedom of living in a car, but showering, for example, sometimes produces annoyance.
American Zoë Hannah lives a life that many just admire on Instagram: he lives in a van converted into a motorhome and travels the world. At the moment, however, he is stuck in New Zealand due to the corona pandemic. Zoë left her job to travel the world with her partner Trent with, says Insider.
“Like it or not, every couple of days we have to move”

– In New Zealand, most of the campsites we have been on are limited to two nights a month. That means whether we wanted to or not, we have to move every couple of days, Zoë describes.
– It can be frustrating if we really enjoy a place, or just don’t have fun moving.

Life in a car is also not just about romance on the road. Disputes also arise.
– When disputes arise in the car, there is just no other pack to go to, Zoë describes.
Admittedly, he admits that cramped living spaces force us to talk about problems.
– Taking space at home might mean a couple of nights apart. In a van, it means hiking alone, or writing for a day at a cafe when my partner is doing something else, Zoë describes.

Injection-free “hardest in van life”
There is also no shower in the car, and you can get one every few days when a suitable event comes up, for example at a campsite, gym, swimming pool or on the beach.
– Because before I loved makeup and long, hot showers, this has been the hardest thing for me in the van life, Zoë says.
The couple takes care of their hygiene by washing themselves with a sponge and using naturally degradable wipes. It is sometimes difficult for Zoë to live a normal life because the knowledge revolved around her that she could not get into the shower.
“So I don’t go to a particularly sweaty yoga class until I know because my next shower time is,” he describes.
“I never thought about how much food I keep in my fridge …”
In addition to the shower, the car lacks a decent kitchen: according to Zoë, the money would give the car, for example, solar panels and decent cooking facilities, but he and Trent can’t afford it.
– We make it work by using a medium-sized cooler bag, a camping stove and a hand-pumped pool, Zoë describes.
– I never thought about how much food I would keep in my fridge until I didn’t have one. Sauces, cut vegetables and meats need to be kept at a certain temperature for food safety, and it’s really hard to keep a cooler bag so cold, especially in the summer heat.

There is no internet either
For example, meats should be roasted immediately on the day of purchase. They cannot therefore be recovered. There are no other “electronic joys” in the car besides the refrigerator: it is difficult to charge the devices and there is no internet in the car. Local data packets Zoë finds it too expensive.
– If I didn’t have Wi-Fi at home to check emails, I would have just turned on a phone hotspot, Zoë describes.
– If I want to do that on the road, it really takes up battery power from both the phone and the computer. It needs to be considered carefully because I don’t have a lot of plugs from which to charge them.
