Forget the five-substitution rule – smaller clubs clicked on bigger ones

Premier League clubs have met today, Thursday. One big topic on which the clubs made their decisions was the use of five exchanges next season. The clubs voted against this.

Due to the corona pandemic, FIFA made a rule change that allowed teams to make five substitutions in a match instead of three. In the Premier League, a new rule was introduced as soon as matches resumed after the crown break.

Almost all teams also took advantage of extra exchanges in matches. However, several Managers were against the new rule change, especially the coaches of the smaller clubs. The reason for this was that the five-substitution rule was felt to make it easier for large clubs with more players to make up.

For the same reason, Premier League clubs on Thursday voted to repeal the rule for next season. Thus, next season in the Premier League will return to three substitutions.

The result of the vote was strict, with 11 votes in favor of the abolition of five exchanges. According to the Premier League’s own rules, the five-shift rule should have received at least 14 votes to remain in force.

Series runners Leeds, West Bromwich and Fulham, among others, voted to cancel five substitutions.
