Posti’s result suffered in April-June, when the impact of the coronavirus further accelerated the sharp decline in letter volumes. The number of addressed letters in Finland decreased by a record 24 percent in the second quarter.

According to the company, adjusted operating profit decreased to EUR 3.1 million from EUR 8.1 million a year ago. Net sales decreased slightly to EUR 392 million.

– The digitalisation of society and the postal strike of 2019 have had a significant impact on Posti’s operations, but the coronavirus situation further accelerated the decline in volumes. This has increased the pressure to speed up Posti’s renewal, says CEO Turkka Kuusisto in a press release.

According to him, Posti has renewed its processes and working methods, which has affected the business and increased costs.

– Posti must ensure the competitiveness of its business in all future scenarios. It is clear that our traditional cost structure is a very big challenge in a rapidly changing operating environment, Kuusisto says.

As a result of the Korona, the number of packages carried by Posti has clearly increased, according to the company. There has been a clear increase in daily, weekly and monthly package volumes since March.
