The Australian Border Guard announces that it will expel a Finnish man accommodated in a reception center from possession of child pornography.

A total of thousands of images and videos characterized as disturbing were found on the phones of the 46-year-old man.

The man had been placed in a reception center in Brisbane, Queensland for four months. He has previously been sentenced to about two years in prison for possession of child pornography, according to the Border Guard.

According to Graeme Grossen, director of the reception center, the case is an example of why it should be possible for residents of the center to confiscate property. The Australian Parliament is currently considering a seizure bill.

– We have evidence that telephones have been used in a number of illegal or inappropriate activities. These include planning an escape attempt, smuggling, luring minors into sex and other sexual offenses against children, Grosse says.

“Powers to seize telephones and other criminal assets are essential to ensure the safety of reception center residents, staff and the community as a whole,” he continues.

Between July 2016 and July 2020, almost 600 cases of telephone misuse occurred in reception centers, according to the Border Guard.
