The International Federation of Athletics (WA) has clarified its rules regarding shoes for competitive use on endurance running trips. In the future, shoes with a sole thickness of more than 25 mils may not be used in track races with distances of 800 meters or more or in cross-country races.

WA’s rule came into force immediately, so according to the Finnish Sports Confederation’s website, it will be introduced immediately in national competition activities in Finland. The rule is already observed and monitored at the Turku Kaleva Games in Turku (13–16 August) and, for example, in the autumn summer Finnish Championships in Kotka and the Finnish Championships in Kurika.

WA’s clarification of the rules for racing running shoes means that running shoe models with a sole thickness of up to 40 miles are only allowed in road running.
