Dave Hughes pays tribute to his mother on her 80th birthday

Dave Hughes shared a touching tribute to his mother on Tuesday.  

The Masked Singer Australia judge posted a black and white image to Instagram, showing his mother, Carmel, in her younger years. 

The 49-year-old revealed that it was his mum’s 80th birthday, and he shared some moving words for the occasion.

The comedian wrote in his caption: ‘This beautiful lass is my mum Carmel who turned 80 today. 

‘She grew up in an orphanage with her sister after their mum died when they were little girls. 

‘She spent her working life nursing. Dad would often say he won the lotto when he married her. Fair call.’

Dave lost his father, Desmond, known as Des, in November 2010.   

He spoke about his father’s death from cancer aged 78 in an interview with the Herald Sun in 2010.

Shortly before he passed away, the TV host told his dad – who was also suffering from dementia – that he loved him and appreciated everything he had done for the family.

‘You don’t tell people you love them because it’s embarrassing to say it. Or tell people you value what they did for you. So I did that very late,’ he confessed. ‘I think he heard me.’ 

Dave added: ‘We come from a place where you just don’t use those words very often. Your parents show it through their actions. It sounds soft or something… but that’s ridiculous.’

Speaking of how his relationship with his father had improved after his turbulent youth, Dave added: ‘Even though we didn’t communicate that much, the fact that I worked hard made him proud.’
