Miley Cyrus says her divorce from Liam Hemsworth felt ‘like a death’

She was revealed on Thursday to have split from her boyfriend Cody Simpson after being together for 10 months.

But Miley was reflecting on her divorce from her ex-husband Liam Hemsworth, 30, when she appeared on an episode of Barstool Sports’ Call Her Daddy podcast that was published the same day.

The 27-year-old pop star didn’t downplay the impact of ending a 10-year relationship and said their painful split was ‘like a death.’

Introspection: Miley Cyrus, 27, looked back at her divorce from Liam Hemsworth, 30, calling it ‘like a death,’ even as she moved on from her breakup with Cody Simpson, 23; Miley and Liam shown in June 2019

‘I had a very public, very big breakup that was over a 10-year span of a relationship…’ she told the host, Alexandra Cooper.

‘It’s like a death when you lose a love that deep. It feels like a death.’

Adding to the emotional pain was the constant reminder of the failed relationship.

‘Honestly, sometimes [death] even feels easier because [with a breakup] the person is still walking on the earth,’ she continued.

Miley and Liam first met and struck up a relationship while filming the 2010 romance The Last Song, based on the novel of the same name by Nicholas Sparks.

One silver lining of the split was that Miley was able to reclaim her sense of self after sublimating it for years.

‘Going though a massive breakup, one thing I gained through all the loss is an idea that what I do is for me,’ she explained.

The Wrecking Ball singer also delved into what she’s looking for in her next relationship as she moves on from Cody.

‘I’ve been very experimental. I just really don’t have a type,’ she said of her past partners.

However, one necessity is someone who’s ‘living a sober lifestyle.’

‘I now no longer look at any sort of AA meetings because I myself, I don’t really want to help someone on their journey of addiction, because I need to take care of my own self,’ she said. ‘But I do know, you don’t as someone that’s living a sober lifestyle, don’t go to the club looking for your next partner, you know?

‘So put yourself in places where you’ll be successful so you don’t get stuck on, “I’m just always wasting my time, meeting these kinds of people.” It’s like, you can really control the kind of people that are going to flow in and out of your life and you can create a filtration system. So I’ve filtered my life of what I will accept and what I will not.’

Miley revealed to Variety in June that she was six months sober, after previously being open about her heavy marijuana use.

Another must for Miley was a strong sense of self-worth and self care

‘One of the things that’s important to me in a relationship, besides acts of service, I like people taking care of themselves. I think the way someone treats himself is a reflection of the way that they’ll treat you. I’m like super into, like, clean eating. I mean, people taking care of themselves,’ she said.

‘I knew that the place to meet my next partner was not going to be at like a f**king Burger King. If clean eating and self maintenance is going to be important — I know to look in communities where those people are going to gather,’ she explained.

After initial reports that Miley and her Australian beau Cody had parted ways, TMZ posted a video of Miley speaking about the breakup.

‘Right now, two halves can’t make a whole and we’re individually just working on ourselves to become the people that we wanna be,’ she said.

She added that the two would likely spend time together again as they had been friends for years before they started dating, and she urged her fans not to create ‘some drama story if next week we’re out, hanging out, or getting pizza.’
