The Society’s Kathryn Newton reacts to the series’ cancelation…after just one season on Netflix

Netflix ‘made the difficult decision’ to cancel their mystery series The Society, after just one season, due to COVID-19 related production constraints.

And series lead Kathryn Newton, who played Allie Pressman, was disappointed but accepting in her reaction to the unfortunate news on social media.

‘I am proud,’ wrote Newton, 23, who posted a screengrab of a Zoom call between herself and her The Society co-stars to Twitter and Instagram on Friday.

Shortly after, Kathryn uploaded a video message to Instagram ‘thank[ing] all the fans that are trending Society right now’ on social media.

She explained that, like the rest of the world, she got news of the series’ cancellation ‘this morning’ and that she is ‘heartbroken, so heartbroken’ over the matter.

Kathryn was later joined by co-star Gideon Adlon, 23, who marveled at the immense love the now canceled show was receiving online.

‘Definitely a bit of a gut-punch, but, you know, our creator told us today that the show is there. You can watch it all the time. It’s not going away and we’re not going away,’ explained Adlon to the devout fans watching.

On her personal Instagram page, Adlon, who played Becca Gelb, showed ‘Big big big love’ to her The Society sign language coach Ronda Moriarty.

‘[Love] you always. I could not have achieved this without you and @seanberdy,’ captioned the actress, who also shared a video from one of their sessions with her nearly 400,000 followers.

Alex Fitzalan, 24, who portrayed the role of Harry Bingham on the critically-acclaimed series, was at a loss for words as he took to Instagram to remark on The Society’s untimely cancellation.

‘Very sad news this morning. Not sure what to say right now but I wanted to share some pics of my time on set for season 1 of The Society. Love you all,’ wrote the Australian actor.

Along with his brief caption, Fitzalan included various behind-the-scenes photos of himself and his castmates taken during the fun-filled filming of season one.

Many of the photos included Adlon, actors Jack Mulhern, Spencer House, and more as they hung out on set, toured filming locations, and transformed into their memorable characters/

But sources revealed to Deadline that there were a multitude of issues at play regarding The Society’s second season, that, eventually, inspired the studio to abandon the project all together.

Allegedly, there was ‘uncertainty around production dates and balancing the availabilities of a large cast like The Society’ and there were also ‘unexpected budget increases due to COVID.’
