Chris Hemsworth, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II and Anya Taylor-Joy cast in Mad Max prequel

George Miller is back at the helm of the Mad Max franchise.

And Chris Hemsworth, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II and Anya Taylor-Joy are set to star in the prequel, Furiousa, according to Deadline.

The 75-year-old director will dive into the character’s backstory, who was originally portrayed by Charlize Theron in the Mad Max: Fury Road film from 2015. 

‘The movie will track the genesis of Furiosa before she teamed up with Max Rockatansky in Fury Road,’ Deadline reported.

Anya will star in the main role that Miller will direct, co-write and produce with his longtime Oscar-nominated producing partner Doug Mitchell.

Miller told The New York Times earlier this year that he was looking for an actress in her 20s to fill the role. 

He also said he considered using de-aging technology for 44-year-old Theron so that she could portray the 24-year-old character, but ultimately decided against it.

He’ll also bring much of the Oscar-winning Mad Max team back, including production designer Colin Gibson, editor Margaret Sixel, sound mixer Ben Osmo and makeup designer Lesley Vanderwalt.

First assistant director PJ Voeten and second unit director and stunt coordinator Guy Norris have also joined the production.

Hemsworth is in pre-production for Marvel’s latest addition to the Thor franchise, Thor: Love & Thunder, which will begin filming in March.

Abdul-Mateen II portrayed Black Manta in the 2018 Aquaman blockbuster and is currently filming the fourth installment of The Matrix. He can also be seen in Netflix’s The Trial of the Chicago 7.

Anya most recently starred in Emma, Here Are The Young Men and the final installment of the X-Men series, The New Mutants.
