Kelly Clarkson recalls being mistaken for fellow American Idol alum Carrie Underwood

She was the very first winner of American Idol in 2002.

And Kelly Clarkson revealed on the most recent episode of NBC’s The Kelly Clarkson Show that she was once confused for American Idol alum Carrie Underwood, 37, in public.

‘This girl came up to me and was like, “Oh my god, your song So Small is one of my favorites,”’ recalled Clarkson, 38, who could not help but laugh about the memory.

Clarkson noted that she ‘looks nothing like Carrie Underwood,’ so the interaction was extra awkward for her.

‘I was so embarrassed for her that I just…She was like, “Can you sign this?”‘ she recalled.

‘And I totally signed “Carrie Underwood.” I think that might be illegal!,’ said Kelly, who launched her talk show in June.

She remembered telling the fan that the song she was referencing to was not her song at all.

‘I don’t have a song So Small,’ Kelly recalled. ‘And then she said another song and I was like, “Oh, you think I’m Carrie Underwood.”‘

Carrie actually won the fourth season of American Idol in 2004 and has since garnered seven Grammy Awards during the span of her career.

Clarkson unveiled the hilariously awkward encounter, while engaging in the ‘I’m Awesome At Being Awkward’ game on her hit talk show.

She was joined by guests Michelle Buteau and Cheryl Hines who were more than eager to lend their voices to the candid conversation.

Adding to the hilarity, Hines, 55, recalled a time when a fan mistook her from Julie Bowen for the hit series Modern Familt.

Metallics were a must for Clarkson, who donned an array of bronze, silver, gold and glitter through the evening.

First, Kelly hit the red carpet in a fringe-laden silver frock, which offered a hint of cleavage via a plunging neckline that flashed a black bustier below.

From there, she slipped into a toga-like gold lamé Retrofete look which evoked Grecian goddess vibes.
