Javicia Leslie debuts her Batwoman suit as the actress films for the series in Vancouver

Javicia Leslie is making history as the first Black woman to play Batwoman.

Since it was announced in July that the 33-year-old actress would be taking over for Ruby Rose on the CW series, fans have been eagerly awaiting the German-born actresses debut.

On Friday evening Javicia was seen in full Batwoman costume while on set filming in Vancouver, as she showed off the iconic character’s full latex suit.

In the exclusive snaps Javicia is seen in the signature black body suit as she films scenes for season two with Meagan Tandy, 35, who plays Sophie Moore in the live action series.

Leslie was suited up in the Batwoman mask rocking red lipstick that matched the costumes crimson accents and cape.

A few weeks back she was seen on set sporting a red wig, though it seems as if the production has pivoted from the look as she showed off natural curls with pieces of red hair.

A lifelong Batman fan, the Always a Bridesmaid star could not be happier to have secured the role, especially during such a transformative period in America.

‘This really had nothing to do with me and everything to do with my people and with little Black girls,’ she told the Hollywood Reporter over the summer.

During a DC Fandome panel in September, she shared that she had almost manifested the role for herself.

‘This has literally been my dream. It’s so funny because in May I did an interview and I said, ‘One of my future goals and one of biggest dreams is to become a superhero.’ I wanted to be a Black superhero. You don’t get to see that that often. Then a month later, I become the first Black Batwoman.’

She continued, ‘It feels really powerful. With everything that’s going on right now, this is what we need. We need to see representation.’

On Saturday morning, Leslie shared a behind the scenes snap from her overnight shoot as she took a photo in her trailer.

Suited up in cozy loungewear after a long night, she wrote that she had the support of her ‘main man’ – her dog.

Despite the long hours, the CW star is having a ball on set as she goofed around in an Instagram reel.

Optimistic about the longevity and freedom the role provides, she shared her excitement about what she hopes will be a lifetime role.

‘There’s not many actors that get this opportunity to play in a world that you can continue to develop and expand on for a decade.’

Javicia secured the role after Rose – the first LGBTQ character in the Arrowverse -opted to leave after one season of the show, citing long hours and growing tension  on top of an injury she sustained while filming.

In a statement to Entertainment Weekly about her exit, Rose said:

‘You know, you have time in quarantine and sort of isolation to just think about a lot of different things and what you want to achieve in life and what you want to do. I think for both [me and the producers], it was a great opportunity to have a dialogue about a lot of things.’
