Nicole Kidman gets candid on her past with crippling loneliness and reveals how husband Keith Urban and her children save her from bad days

Nicole Kidman, 53, has maintained an impressive Hollywood career over the past three decades.

But despite her incredible successes, the Oscar-winning actress’ highs have also been met with equal lows.  

In a wide-ranging chat with Glamour UK this month, Nicole candidly revealed her past experience with crippling loneliness and how holding on to emotions for roles can often be ‘very taxing’ mentally.

The Australian actress is GLAMOUR’s November digital cover star, with the entire photo shoot of Nicole taken at her 1878 Georgian home in New South Wales.  

‘They say loneliness is the great killer. It causes so much pain and I’ve been lonely, and it is very, very, very hard… Loneliness is an epidemic,’ Nicole said.

The Undoing star said as an actor she is required to practice ‘psychological discipline’, by using and exploring a range of her emotions for roles and snapping back to real life.   

Nicole explained: ‘I’ve had to learn how to shield… It can be very taxing, as I absorb a lot of the emotion, so I’ve had to find a way to balance that.’

The Moulin Rouge actress went on to credit her relationship with country musician husband Keith Urban for helping to maintain her mental health. 

‘I am very fortunate to come home to him. My heart goes out to the people who don’t have a person to go to now,’ she said.

‘I have a very good relationship. It is a very soothing, comforting place for me to go, and he’s a very strong, warm, kind man. I’m very fortunate to have that in my life, because it’s a really strong place to be able to go and curl up. And this is a lonely world, right?’ Nicole added.

Her greatest role yet: Nicole gave birth to her first biological child with husband Keith (Sunday Rose, 12) in 2008, followed by Faith, nine, who the couple welcomed via surrogacy

Despite multiple industry accolades and major Hollywood roles, the Big Little Lies star still considers her role as mother as one of the most precious.

‘I like the feeling of taking care of people, that’s my joy and it’s not about receiving something back,’ she said.

Nicole gave birth to her first biological child with husband Keith (Sunday Rose, 12) in 2008, followed by Faith, nine, who the couple welcomed via surrogacy. 

She also shares adopted children Isabella, 27, and Connor, 25, with ex Tom Cruise.
