Once Upon a Time reboot gets canceled AGAIN at Pop TV

The critically-acclaimed reboot of One Day at a Time has been cancelled yet again, though the show’s producers and stars hope the third time is the charm.

The Latin-centric reboot of the hit 1970s and 1980s sitcom debuted on Netflix in 2017 and lasted for three seasons before it was canceled by the streamer, with Pop TV picking it up for the fourth season, which debuted in March.

Now Pop TV has officially canceled the show for a second time, though Variety reports that Sony Pictures Television is shopping it elsewhere, as the show’s stars and creators react to the news on social media.

While the news is unfortunate for the One Day at a Time team, which has earned rave reviews throughout its four-season run, it’s not all that surprising.

Just weeks before the fourth season debuted, Variety reported that Pop TV was moving away from original scripted programming and into IP controlled by the network’s owner, ViacomCBS through their recent merger.

The network canceled original shows Flack, Florida Girls and Best Intentions, leaving just Schitt’s Creek, in the midst of its final season, and One Day at a Time as the network’s only original shows.

Season 4 of One Day at a Time debuted in March, though, due to COVID-19 restrictions, they could only produce six episodes.

The main cast, including Justina Machado, Todd Grinnell, Isabella Gomez, Marcel Ruiz, Stephen Tobolowsky and Rita Moreno, also lent their voices to an animated episode, which debuted in July.

The show was also given a big push by Pop TV, which simulcast the show on TV Land, with CBS also airing episodes sin October.

Creator/showrunner Gloria Calderon Kellett shared a news article about the cancellation, while holding out hope for the show on Twitter.

‘Sadly, the news is out. I’m not sad just yet, y’all. We still have some hope for new homes. Hang tight, my loves. You know that if I go down, I will go down swinging for this show (& cast & crew) I love,’ she said, with the hashtags #MoreODAAT #RepresentationMatters.

Co-creator Mike Royce added, ‘So… yes. Much has changed at Viacom in the last year and unfortunately we won’t be on Pop anymore. Thanks to everybody over there for the opportunity to do season 4. And guess what? We’re still trying for season 5. What if #ODAAT was the first show ever on 3 networks?’

Actress Isabella Gomez mirrored Royce’s sentiment, adding, ‘Maybe third network’s the charm? Seriously, regardless of what happens, familia para siempre. And I’ll have a sappy post coming when we find out which way this goes. I love you guys. #ODAAT.’
