Schitt’s Creek funnymen Eugene and Dan Levy prove talent runs in the family as they cover EW’s Entertainers Of The Year issue

Eugene and Dan Levy are quite the duo, sweeping the comedy categories at this year’s Emmy Awards with their show Schitt’s Creek.

And the father/son funnymen are rounding out 2020 with yet another accolade, named two of Entertainment Weekly‘s Entertainers Of The Year.

Eugene, 73, and Dan, 37, were all laughs as they opened up about their work and relationship in a banter-filled Q&A for their special cover.

It runs in the family! Eugene and Dan Levy made things a family affair after being dubbed two of Entertainment Weekly’s 2020 Entertainers Of The Year

The elder Levy explained how they first started working together on Schitt’s Creek, telling EW he was on board before Dan even pitched his idea.

‘My son came to me with an idea for a television show and said, ‘Do you want to work on it with me?’ I said, ‘Yes.’ It wouldn’t matter what the idea was,’ he said.

The project started small, first crafting scripts during Dan’s weekly family visits.

‘I would go over to my parents’ house every Sunday, and we’d sit down for a few hours and start to hash out what this idea was,’ the Happiest Season star said. ‘And slowly but surely, things started to unfold.’

While Eugene is a comedy legend – anchoring classics like Best In Show and appearing as the flustered dad in the American Pie series – he found himself learning heaps from his son.

‘I always felt, being the senior member with the most experience, I would have to mentor a little bit in both a writing capacity and even possibly a performing capacity,’ the Canadian talent said.

‘Once I realized I did not have to do that, I could step back and we could go through this as equal partners,’ Levy went on. ‘That was the beginning of this thing moving forward like a well-oiled machine.’

Though Eugene called their work dynamic ‘very professional,’ Dan did have one gripe, telling EW everything was fine ‘except for [him] being at the monitors all the time, watching [sister/co-star] Sarah and I, mouthing the words along like a stage parent.’

‘I… was not aware anybody was looking at me,’ Eugene realized.

‘Everyone was looking at you,’ Dan quipped back.
