‘I had booked to go to a cottage in the country 4 hours outside of London during the Xmas holiday, but due to my panic about getting Covid and the potential double act of gestational diabetes and Placenta Previa, I decided to stay home to be near the hospital I know.’

Gestational diabetes is a type of diabetes that affects pregnant women, usually during the second or third trimester. It can affect people who didn’t have diabetes before their pregnancy and usually goes away after the birth.

It occurs when the hormones produced during pregnancy make it difficult for your body to use insulin properly, putting you at an increased risk of insulin resistance.

Placenta Previa (low-lying placenta) occurs when the placenta covers part or all of the cervix during the last months of pregnancy, and can cause severe bleeding before or during labour.

The singer who is already mum to a four-year-old daughter added: ‘It’s a fine line between trying to continue life and juggling the trauma of my previous birth experience and the panic I face negotiating this one.

‘All the time trying to work and bat away the little voice in my head that tells me every day my career is failing/my body is failing/my pregnancy is failing… And staying optimistic without being able to see friends and loved ones, and to be honest most of all an audience! ‘

Paloma also revealed she doesn’t expect to get back performing until September 2021, adding: ‘I miss seeing your faces knowing the words and I miss that escapism we have together when I’m performing. September 2021 seems too far away.

‘Sending love to you, the greatest audience in the world. I miss you my lifeline… x’

Last month Paloma spoke out about her rollercoaster pregnancy during an appearance on Lorraine to promote her new album Infinite Things.

‘I don’t have easy pregnancies, so it’s been emotional rollercoaster. If you look on the NHS website of things that could be irking you, I’ve got all of them!’ she explained.

The star admitted though that being a mum helps fuel her creative process, revealing that after she had her daughter four years ago, her work ethic changed. ‘

‘I became way more efficient and my output changed, you become more compartmentalised and you don’t become whimsically slow,’ she said.

WHAT IS GESTATIONAL DIABETES?

Gestational diabetes is a type of diabetes that affects pregnant women, usually during the second or third trimester.

Women with gestational diabetes do not have diabetes before their pregnancy. It usually goes away after the birth.

It occurs when the hormones produced during pregnancy make it difficult for your body to use insulin properly, putting you at an increased risk of insulin resistance.

Treatment focuses on managing blood sugar levels through diet, exercise and sometimes medication.

Women can significantly reduce their risk of developing gestational diabetes by managing their weight, eating healthily and keeping active.

Figures estimate one in five women will develop gestational diabetes during pregnancy.
