MAGA mob was only 100 feet from the office where Mike Pence, his wife and his daughter were hiding

The rioters that stormed the U.S. Capitol on January 6 were just 100 feet from the officer where Vice President Mike Pence and his family were hiding, new reports suggest.

It took 14 minutes to evacuate Pence from the Senate Chamber after the MAGA mob first broke into the building, according to law enforcement officials and video footage obtained by The Washington Post.

Secret Service agents eventually managed to convince Pence to leave and rushed him and his family into an office before they were taken to a second secure location.

Less than 60 seconds after Pence was taken to his hideaway, a violent crowd followed a Capitol officer up a flight of stairs – just 33 yards from the office but away from the chamber where many lawmakers still remained.

According to The Post, at 1.59pm, outgoing Capitol Police Chief Steven Sund received the first reports that the rioters were attempting to break into the Capitol by smashing doors and windows.

It was just 14 minutes later, at 2.13pm, that Pence was ushered off the Senate floor and quickly escorted to an office hideaway.

Just one minute after Secret Service whisked Pence out of the Senate chamber, at 2.14pm, the pro-Trump mob met Officer Eugene Goodman on a second-floor landing.

The landing was less than 100 feet from the hideaway Pence, his wife and his daughter had hustled into, three anonymous sources told The Post.

That means if the rioters had reached the landing just seconds beforehand, they would have seen the Vice President being evacuated.

This is especially pertinent because many of the mob were angry that Pence refused to cave to President Trump’s demands and overturn the election results.

One group of rioters chanted: ‘Hang Mike Pence!’ while one man left a note on Pence’s desk that read: ‘It’s only a matter of time, justice is coming.’

The man, Jacob Chansley of Arizona, also known as the ‘QAnon Shaman’, was arrested and charged with two felonies and accused Pence of being a child-trafficker while in custody, The Post reported.

Prior to the incident, Officer Goodman, had been guarding an entrance to the Senate when the mob breached the Capitol.

Goodman went down a corridor to confront the rioters, and was met by a group of President Trump’s supporters.

In a recently new clip, unearthed by ProPublica, the mob and Goodman are in a confrontation with one person shouting: ‘Where they countin’ the votes?!’

As it became clear Goodman was outnumbered, he ran up a set of stairs away from the Senate floor, leading the mob with him.

Lawmakers have presented a bipartisan bill recommending the officer, Eugene Goodman, receive the Congressional Gold Medal for his ‘bravery’

After being in the office, Pence was told by his agents that they recommended he be evacuated from the Capitol.

Both times he declined, until the third time in which Secret Service agents said they have to leave right then and there.

After Capitol Police determined that the building was secure, Pence returned the Senate Chamber at 8pm, reported The Post.

Meanwhile, a group of lawmakers have introduced a bill to award Goodman with the Congressional Gold Medal.

US Representatives Nancy Mace, Emanuel Cleaver, II, and Charlie Crist announced the bipartisan bill to honor Goodman for ‘his bravery and quick thinking’ during last week’s insurrection at the Capitol.
