The sinister trick MAFS producers use to make the brides look bad on camera

Married At First Sight attracts a huge audience based on the dramatic antics that take place on screen.

Following the success of the sixth season of the show in the UK, former star Melissa Lucarelli has exposed the sinister tricks producers and experts use to enhance the tension on the hit Channel 9 dating show.

In a candid interview with the Till Death Do Us Pod podcast, Melissa joined the hosts Tova and Mike Leigh, who said that they felt like the women on the show were painted in a negative light compared to the men.

Mention it all! Former Married At First Sight star Melissa Lucarelli (left) revealed how women on the show are sometimes portrayed much worse than their male co-stars

‘I’d see comments all the time and they’d say, “Oh My God, the women are crazy… no wonder they’re single, the poor guys.”‘ Melissa, 39, said.

She said that she felt an imbalance in the representation of both herself and TV groom Dino Hira, 35.

‘With Dino and I… Dino whispers, so when I speak normally it looks like I’m just yelling at him. They [the grooms] all look like the victim and we’re [the brides] all these crazy, loud and over-the-top girls. And it didn’t look good on us.’

And according to the star, producers weren’t the only ones trying to build the suspense between females and males during filming.

‘When we were with the experts, we sit on that couch for about 40 minutes, but you only see a couple of minutes. But even I felt they always directed the questions or the problems at the females.’

While in discussion with the hosts, Heidi Latcham and Mike Gunner’s dynamic on the show was brought up. ‘Mike was a d***’, the podcast host said, before explaining that it was odd to see experts asking Heidi more questions than her husband.

As a result, Mel admitted that she had noticed that herself and Heidi felt pressured while sitting on the couch as they were often the only ones asked to answer any questions during the grilling sessions with the show’s relationship experts.

‘When it was Dino and I he would say, “Everything has been great.” But then they’d ask me “Why have you been doing this?”‘ she explained.

‘So then next minute I was [crying] on the couch because they break you down and they’re blaming everything on you.

‘It felt like it was all the female’s fault and everything was directed at us to answer,’ she added.

During the in-depth chat, Mel also said she noticed she was typecast as the ‘relatable’ and ‘funny’ character on the show.

‘I didn’t notice at the time, but that obviously meant I had to look like s**t all the time… they felt the need to always show me eating or getting pissed.’

As Channel 9 airs this season of Married At First Sight, could it be a similar case of the brides getting the short end of the stick?

Viewers have already seen the likes of Rebecca Zemeck, 27, painted as a villain, while her husband Jake Edwards has been portrayed in a positive light.
