Cardi B congratulates ‘small Black artists’ who received Grammy nods… amid The Weeknd’s boycott

Cardi B has remained one of the most outspoken artists of our time.

But the Grammy winner is keeping a positive outlook on this year’s awards show, amid scrutiny over their nomination process.

She congratulated the ‘small Black artists’ who received Grammy nominations this year, amid The Weeknd‘s planned boycott after he was infamously snubbed by the Recording Academy.

The 28-year-old took to Twitter Saturday with a lengthy statement, which she prefaced: ‘How I feel bout the Grammy’s!

‘Don’t forget to congratulate the small black artist that got nominated that got overshadowed again cause of the drama. It’s their moment finally!’

She wrote in the Notes app statement: ‘I do feel that there were some albums and songs that should have been considered for nominations. Maybe by next year they will get it right.

‘However let’s not forget the Grammys nominated soo many independent Black artists this year that don’t get the exposure by blogs, magazines and other award shows like Chika, D Smoke, Royce 5’9, Freddie Gibbs, Jay Electronica, Kaytranada, Brittany Howard, Mykal Kilgor, Ledisi, Jean & Marcus Baylor, Luke James, Gregory Porter, Giveon, Ant Clemons, Robert Grasper, Free Nationals & Thundercat and so much more.’

Their moment: The WAP artist concluded: 'Besides all the bulls*** let's not forget to congratulate these artists. This is their moment too and they been working their a** off with no exposure and let's not overshadow it with feelings cause your favourite might not be on the list' (pictured in January, 2020)

Although she’s not nominated this year, Cardi is scheduled to perform at the 63rd Grammy Awards, which air live Sunday from the Staples Center in Los Angeles.

It comes after the Weeknd, 31, vowed to boycott the awards show going forward, after his fourth studio album After Hours was snubbed.

He’s dominated every awards show since dropping the album last March, and his single Blinding Lights has become the first song to ever spend an entire year in the Top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100.

The Heartless artist (real name: Abel Tesfaye) called out the Academy for using corrupt ‘secret committees’ to select nominees, releasing a statement to The New York Times: ‘Because of the secret committees. I will no longer allow my label to submit my music to the Grammys.’

The Weeknd has been backed up by the likes of Zayn Malik, Nicki Minaj, Teyana Taylor and more from the industry.

Beyoncé, 39, has also turned down an appearance at the awards show, despite earning the most nominations with a total of nine categories.

Recording Academy president/CEO Harvey Mason Jr told Variety in response: ‘Some of it was [decided by] the [‘secret’] nominating committees and some was the voting body, because some of the awards he was eligible for did not have nominating committees, so it was a combination of both.

‘But again, it’s unfortunate, we never like to see somebody as talented as the Weeknd get left out or feel left out. It’s not something any of us are happy about.’
