Sunrise weatherman Sam Mac goes public with new girlfriend Rebecca James

Sunrise weatherman Sam Mac has confirmed he’s found love once again, eight months after his shock split from his ex-girlfriend Elle Whittaker.

The giddy 44-year-old couldn’t resist showing off his new girlfriend Rebecca James on Saturday, sharing a lengthy statement about the glamorous fashion stylist on Instagram.

Despite recently saying he was going to keep his next relationship out of the public eye, Sam wrote alongside a picture of the loved-up couple: ‘This is Bec. We were introduced on Insta last year via our mutual friend.’

‘Bec lives in Melb, & I’m in Syd, so the Victorian border restrictions meant it was illegal for us to meet in person.’

Sam said that despite restrictions, the duo were able to form a great friendship using ‘Insta chats, phone calls and Friday zoom drinks’, saying they spoke ‘every single day for almost 6 months’.

‘So when restrictions eased late last year, we could finally meet in person,’ he went on. ‘By this stage I felt like I knew everything about her… except if she was interested in being more than friends.’

He went on to say that over a ‘few Harry Potter marathons and a glass of two of Zonzo’ the pair discovered they both felt the same way – but ‘were just so cautious about ruining the friendship.’

‘Bec is obviously super driven, & taking on the world,’ he continued. ‘But it was her calmness & kindness that I was drawn to (& the fact she’s a 17/10). She makes me so happy & I’m absolutely delighted to share her with you guys.’

‘See, 2020 wasn’t all bad,’ he concluded.

The duo are currently enjoying a romantic getaway to Kangaroo Valley together, as their sweet new romance blossoms.

It comes after Sam called it quits with his communications manager ex-girlfriend Elle, after just a few months together last July.

Bizarrely enough, in light of their split he recently vowed to keep his next relationship out of the the public eye while on his former Sunrise co-star Samantha Armytage’s podcast Something To Talk About.

Sam confessed he felt ‘burnt’ by the overwhelming public interest in his dating life.

‘At the time, I was happy and I felt like I didn’t have anything to hide. So I did share,’ he said.

‘Yes, when it doesn’t work out or it doesn’t go the distance, there’s definitely interest because people can become invested. I understand it.

‘I don’t regret how that played out, it was a learning experience. And I don’t regret that relationship. You learn and you grow and you take things from different relationships.’

Sam has previously made no secret of the fact his job at Sunrise makes it difficult for him to maintain a long-term relationship.

He reluctantly announced his romance with Elle on Seven’s breakfast show in March, when he brought her up during a weather report.

His Sunrise colleagues joked that his girlfriend didn’t exist, and he proved that they were in fact together by sharing a photo of the couple on Instagram.

Sam never alluded to a break-up on social media, but the pair had not been pictured together since April 20.

That same month, the popular TV host told the Fitzy & Wippa radio show that he was enjoying spending time with Elle in lockdown.

No regrets: 'I don't regret how that played out, it was a learning experience. And I don't regret that relationship. You learn and you grow and you take things from different relationships,' he said

‘There is definitely a positive to it [staying at home]. I mean, I’ve got a new girlfriend now so I’ve got time to actually spend with her,’ he said.

‘We’ve only been official since just before isolation. I got her at the pre-isolation sale! I got her just before it all happened.’

Radio host Sarah McGilvray noted that it was ‘pretty intense’ for the couple to shack up in lockdown, considering they hadn’t been together for that long.

‘Yeah, it is a bit intense, but so far so good,’ he replied.
