Sienna Miller reveals why she hated being called an ‘It girl’

Sienna Miller was one of the most sought-after ‘It girls’ of the 2000s. 

However, the actress, 39, does not take that title as a compliment, telling Stellar Magazine this week that she always wanted to ‘kick her way out of that box’. 

‘It was upsetting at the time. I don’t even know what [‘It girl’] means but it does sound reductive. It doesn’t sound nice,’ she told the publication. 

The British star added that she was recently upset by watching documentaries on Britney Spears and Amy Winehouse, and recalling her own experiences of fame in the early 2000s.  

‘[When I] see footage of photographers chasing and attacking women in the way they did, I start shaking – it was so intense. 

‘It was a strange time to be a young person becoming well known, at the height of whatever feeding-frenzy was going on,’ she said. 

Elsewhere in the interview, The Layer Cake actress says she has sworn off taking ‘wife and girlfriend’ roles, and is relieved that the film industry has finally caught up with her ‘feminist’ attitude.

‘I think because of what’s happening in the world and this tidal-wave of feminism sweeping through, and Hollywood waking up to its latent misogyny and the ugly patriarchy being exposed, people are scared to stick women in movies just to sell tickets. And I think my realisation coincided with this,’ she said.   

Sienna is currently busy filming new political series Anatomy Of A Scandal in London. 

The Alfie actress is starring as the wife of a shamed politician played by Rupert Friend. 

The plot of the movie follows the trial of the Eton-educated politician after he’s accused of sexually assaulting a young political aide.

Anatomy Of A Scandal is based on the acclaimed 2018 bestseller by former political journalist Sarah Vaughan.
