Couple build world’s first campervan which has its own LIFT to take you to an upstairs bedroom

An inventive couple have built a £60,000 motorhome which is the first in the world to have a lift to transport tired campers up to bed.

Gemma and Simon Robins spent seven weeks converting a 2020 Fiat Ducato into a hi-tech campervan.

Simon, 41, built an electric hydraulic scissor lift to provide access to the bed in the pop top roof.

The couple, from Wrexham, have tested the luxury vehicle by staying overnight with their two children, Mason, nine, and 12-year-old Emilia.

Besides the full shower room, toilet, four traveling seats, two double beds, fridge, oven, sink and three-burner hob as well as space to transport a motorbike.

They are now selling the solar-powered four-berth van for £60,000.

‘We couldn’t work out where to put the bed and get to the extra bed on the roof so we built the lift to get up to the roof,’ said Gemma, 34. ‘I’ve never seen a campervan with one a lift before, so I think it’s pretty unique and from what we have seen the only one in the world.

‘We wanted to build a very versatile van that was perfect for families because it could sleep and travel four.

‘It needed a massive amount of floor space to fit other things like motorbikes and kayaks.

‘We fitted a pop top to the roof to allow sleeping space for an extra two, but the room unzips, which makes a great viewing platform for if you are at a race track, but this is also great for stargazing.’

Gemma went on to explain how the family wanted to completely live off-grid and didn’t want to have to rely on camp sites and hook-ups.

‘Everything in the camper from the water to the gas heating allows you to be independent,’ explained Gemma.

‘We also wanted the design to be funky and stylish unlike a traditional caravan which we did with the quality of the materials, the colour scheme and the gloss effect.

‘We usually build bespoke camper vans from an empty van provided by the customer.

‘I think this one will be good for intrepid explorers and travellers because you can go wherever you want as long as you can fill up with the water and gas tanks.

Gemma continued: ‘My husband races bikes and you can take it to a race track where they aren’t usually electricity hook-ups.

‘And with the Covid situation some campsites are not opening shower facilities and toilets but all that’s inside this one.

‘We took it to a race track last to test it ourselves with our two children and it was really comfortable.

‘There is enough space to move around and not trip over each other. It’s got all the mod cons, it’s like going on the road in your house.’

Gemma, who says the couple are ‘delighted’ with how the project has turned out, added: ‘We worked full-time on it for seven weeks in our workshop, which is our biggest project yet.’
