Despite the dog’s persistence, President Higgins calmly pats and strokes the dog as he continues with his piece to camera.

With the puppy out of the camera shot, the President playfully responds to his pet, as he’s clearly used to this type of distraction from his furry companion.

The footage has been viewed more than 29,000 times on Instagram, with social media users eager to share their delight with the clip.

President Higgins has had Bernese mountain dogs for more than 19 years, and each morning his pets accompany him on his walk through the grounds of Áras an Uachtaráin.

A versatile working dog from Switzerland, Bermese mountain dogs were bred to herd cattle and pull carts and can weigh up to 120 lbs and grow up to 70 cm.

Affectionately known as ‘the Berner’, while the dogs are easy to train, they are prone to suffer with several health issues and shed a lot in Spring and Autumn.
