The boat is complete with an emerald sofa, wood-burning stove, cosy kitchen with pots and pans hanging on the wall and a wooden wine rack at one side.

His rescue collie lurcher accompanies him on the boat and often features in his pictures while she snuggles up on blankets on the sofa and in his bed.

Jonny has also revealed that he is often visited by a heron, who he has called Keith, with the bird appearing on his narrowboat in the mornings.

He tweeted: ‘Had a heron casually strut by my window this morning, head thrusting like a cockney geezer. Stopped and looked at me like I was the weird one. Move along. Nothing to see here.’

It comes as Jonny spoke about his life on the water to Phillip Schofield and Holly Willoughby on This Morning on Tuesday as he discussed his recent storyline on Emmerdale, in which his character Dr Liam Cavanagh got engaged to Leyla Harding (Roxy Shahidi).

The actor shared: ‘Three and a half years now I’ve lived on Benedict, which is a 60ft narrowboat.’

When asked about the wildlife he often encounters by presenter Holly, Jonny said: ‘Keith is a resident heron at the dock where I’ve got the boat permanently moored now.

‘He struts by the window most mornings, peering in at me as if I’m the weird one. He’s a lovely fellow.’

Jonny has been in a relationship with Scottish actress Natalie J Robb, who plays Moira Barton on the show, since last year.

Speaking of his partner, he said: ‘We are just shy of a year and it’s still early days but we are having a lovely time.

‘I have learnt so much from Natalie. She has been working on TV since she was knee high. We both love the work so much, we spend whole evenings discussing scripts and learning lines.’

They were revealed to be dating in June last year when they logged in to a Zoom call together to celebrate a 50th birthday celebration for co-star Liam Fox, who plays Dan Spencer.

Speaking about the romance on Loose Women at the time, she explained: ‘Our first date was in mid-January, and then we were just having a couple of dates in February and then obviously March lockdown happened. And we were together at the time that Boris Johnson announced it.

‘So we’re like: “Oh”. So he’s been kind of staying with me, and then they were saying, “Yes, it could be three weeks. Yes, it might be six weeks.” I was like, “Oh, OK!”‘

Natalie told how she and Jonny – who, first joined the show in 2014 and has been a recurring character since 2018- grew close on a charity trip to Lapland, and their relationship progressed from there.

She said: ‘We just kind of evolved. We did a charity where you go out with children who have cancer and you take them to Lapland.

‘We were on that, and it’s a day trip, so you’re there and back in a day, and from then on we just sort of got to know each other better.

‘I’ve worked with him and things, but I’ve got to know him better and just went on from there. A few text messages and things like that. We went out for a meal and the rest is history.’
